EDU402
Assignment # 1

Grade Level:  5
Subject:          Science
Topic:             Simple Machine
Students will be able to:
Objectives:
1: Demonstrate how wedge and inclined plane are used to move.
2:Compare the three kind of levers using examples.
3: Describe how lever makes work easier by giving examples of its uses from daily life.
Resources/Material:
Book, Wooden, Plate, Spring balance, Thread, Knife, Steel ruler, apple, meter rod, weights.
Ask the students, what is a simple machine? Students response a device which makes work easier to do) ask the students to name some simple machines you often use in daily life.
Task 1:ask a student to lift a bundle of books tied with the spring balance vertically upward.
Ask him to measure the weight of bundle by noting the reading of spring balance.
Then ask him to make an inclined plane by using a stack of book, and wooden plate. Tie a bundle of book, with one end of the thread attach the other end of the thread end of the thread with a spring. Balance and pull the bundle along the inclined plane.
Ask the students to note the reading of spring balance.
Task 2:prepare a lever by balancing a meter rod at its center of gravity on a wooden wedge.
·         Hang a weight of load at one side of the ruler.
Ask a student what happened?
·         Now hang a load of 50g on the other side of cat a point where the rod is again balanced.
·         Ask what happen now? The student response. The rod is balanced.

Conclusion:ask the student what they have learn today and write the correct answer on the white board.
·         And inclined plane is a slope or ramp along which a load can be lifted up easily.
·         Knife is also a simple machine called wedge.
·         Some examples of wedges are: Knife, Axe, Nail Pin and Knitting Needles etc.
·         Lever are used to lift heavy weights with less effort around a pivot.
·         The lever can be classified into the first kind of lever. The second kind of lever and the third kind of lever based on the relative position, of the fulcrum, the effort and the load.
·         In the first kind of lever, the fulcrum is between the effort and load. e.g.:a pair of scissor, pliers, a lid opener and claw hammer etc.
·         In the second kind of lever, the load is between the fulcrum and effort. E.g.: nut cracker, bottle opener and paper cutter.
·         In the third kind of lever, the effort is between the fulcrum and load e.g.: a pair of long and stapler.
Assessment:
Teacher will ask student at the end.
·         How does an inclined plane make our work easier?
·         What is the first kind of lever?
·         What is the second kind of lever?
·         What is the third kind of lever?
·         Involved the student in solving the question, given at the end of the chapter.
First kind of lever
Second kind of lever
Third kind of lever
